Dear lovely readers,
As we step gently into spring, I hope your Easter break has brought moments of joy, fun, and peace — in the simple pleasures, in time with loved ones, or in quiet moments with nature. This is such a beautiful season to feel grounded and inspired by the stories nature is unfolding around us.
A Joyful Collaboration with Pips Cottage
One of the greatest joys of running Withnell is connecting with other passionate makers — those who are telling their stories through their craft, working sustainably, and contributing meaningfully to our local economy. While it may look dreamy from the outside, we all know it takes grit and perseverance too. The juggle is real, and the learning curve can feel more like a rock climb!
That’s why I find such value in community — talking through ideas, sharing thoughts, and supporting one another. Which leads me to something I’m incredibly excited to share…
I’m delighted to introduce you to Julie from Pips Cottage — a talented local willow weaver whose work is both beautiful and deeply rooted in our Lancashire landscape.
Julie creates high-quality baskets using traditional English techniques, with organic, homegrown and Somerset willows. Her sculptural work is often inspired by the natural heritage of Lancashire, incorporating upcycled local wood and age-old basketry skills passed down through generations.
I first met Julie during one of our early events at Withnell, and I’ve continued to admire her stunning pieces at local shows and markets ever since. Her craftsmanship is as captivating as her ethos.
With our shared love for nature, Lancashire heritage and sustainable making, a collaboration felt like a perfect match.
In fact, the name Withnell itself means "the hill where willow grows" — ‘withy’ being an old word for willow, and ‘nell’ meaning hill.
So, on a damp February day, Julie arrived at the studio, her van filled with the most exquisite handwoven baskets and willow sculpture. Together, we selected three beautiful designs to offer to our Withnell customers:
-
‘Creel’ Foraging Basket – with a rich leather strap
-
‘Boat’ Shopper – spacious and practical
-
‘Flower’ Trug – a classic garden companion
Each basket is lovingly handmade by Julie and modelled by her wearing our Helen dress in Durgan and Orchard check. You can now find these special pieces available to shop on our website.

Studio & Seasonal Updates
Things are buzzing behind the scenes at Withnell, and I’d love to share a few bits of news with you:
🏡 Open Studio
Just a few final touches and the studio will be ready to open for visitors. You’re welcome to visit by appointment anytime, but I’ll also be hosting open studio days from 10am–3pm — details coming soon.
🧵 Orders
Linen has been flowing steadily through the studio lately. Checks are having a real moment — especially the ever-popular orchard check and oatmeal check. Thank you for all your beautiful orders and continued support.
🌊 Travel
I’ll be away in early May for a much-loved tradition — our 40th anniversary trip to Cornwall with dear friends. I still remember our first trip to Harlyn Bay at 17, squeezed into a tiny car with nothing but tents, laughter, and a wing and a prayer.
📸 Photo Shoot
I’ll be making samples soon for an early May shoot with the lovely Gemma from @folkandkin_. We’ll be capturing our garments in new colourways and featuring a fresh new style — Paula. I’m so excited to share the results with you!
