Fabric Waste Reduction & Textile Upcycling

Reducing fabric waste through thoughtful production
We are committed to reducing fabric waste in fashion by finding a purpose for every scrap of our natural textiles. From community initiatives to recycling and repurposing, waste reduction is built into our design and production process.
In traditional clothing manufacture, an estimated 10–30% of fabric is wasted during cutting. At Withnell, we take a different approach. By producing made-to-order clothing and cutting fabric in the most efficient way possible, we minimise excess materials and avoid unnecessary waste.
Any remaining offcuts are thoughtfully reused rather than discarded.
Textile upcycling and creative reuse
Leftover fabric scraps are transformed into upcycled textile products, including zero-waste scrunchies, scented lavender bags, and hanging hearts. Some offcuts are also incorporated directly into our garments as trims for collars, pockets, and detailing — extending the life of every textile we use.

Scrap upcycling for garment repair
Instead of using new materials, we repurpose fabric scraps to create repair pouches for our garments. These small bags support clothing repair and garment longevity, aligning with circular fashion principles.
Designed to be reused, customers often use these pouches to store jewellery, coins, or make-up — keeping materials in circulation beyond their original purpose.

Supporting our community
We donate selected fabric scraps to local schools and nurseries, encouraging creativity, learning, and hands-on making. Sharing our materials helps support community projects while preventing usable textiles from going to waste.
Fabric scraps for creative crafting
To further reduce textile waste, we offer 1kg fabric scrap bags for a small fee. These bags are ideal for crafting, mending, and creative projects, allowing our materials to continue their journey through thoughtful reuse.
