A skirt with a story in the stitches.
Designed and made in Lancashire from premium cotton poplin.
Blackhurst is a skirt of generous proportions and thoughtful details, designed for comfort, movement and everyday wear.
Developed from the gentle A-line shape of our Helen dress, carefully placed pleats create a lovely fullness and natural fall. A fully elasticated waist makes Blackhurst easy to wear, while two deep side-seam pockets add practicality.
At the hem, the cloth's original selvedge has been left visible, accompanied by rows of individually drawn topstitching. These gently curving lines echo the hills of the Pennines, the familiar landscape surrounding the Withnell studio.
A small, personal detail that connects the garment to the place where it was made.
Comfortable, considered and made to become a familiar favourite.

The StoryBlackhurst takes its name from a once-grand house built on the hillside overlooking a local print and dye works.
During the Industrial Revolution, three brothers owned the works, and one chose to build his home on the elevated ground above. He named it Blackhurst.
Today, the house and its stables lie in ruins, surrounded by woodland. Nature has slowly reclaimed what was once a place of industry and family life, leaving traces of its history amongst the trees.
A familiar part of our Lancashire landscape, where the past is never quite lost.

Sourced with care
Where possible, I choose materials made in the UK and Ireland, or source through long-established UK merchants. For the things that can't be found closer to home, I work with trusted suppliers who share information about where and how their materials are made.
I believe you should know what goes into your clothes. Every Withnell garment comes with its own recipe, listing the materials used, where I sourced them and where they were made.
